Feel at home in Caye Caulker, Belize
If there's ever a place that sums up 'Caribbean vibes', it has to be Caye Caulker. Just a short boat ride from mainland Belize, this tiny island has a reputation for being so laid back it's almost lying down. Complete with signs telling you to 'slow down', this is the perfect place to do just that.
People flock to Caye Caulker year round to get a taste of the Caribbean dream. Whilst there are only 3 main streets on the whole island, there's plenty of choice when it comes to places to stay.
Yocamatsu Caribbean B&B is the perfect place to get the most out of your island experience. The brightly coloured wooden cabanas draw you in at first glance, and the luxurious interiors make you want to stay forever. The rooms have everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay, from a coffee maker and mini bar, to luxury linens and air conditioning.
Step outside and you have a spectacular view over the island's football pitch. Local teams play every Sunday, making for a fantastic way to spend the afternoon! We watched from Yocamatsu's private rooftop bar, whilst helping ourselves to cold beers from the well stocked self-serve bar. The rooftop has 360 degree panoramic views. You can watch the sunrise on one side of the island and watch it set behind the ocean on the other.
Breakfast at Yocamatsu was a highlight of our stay. B&B owner Greg cooks up a storm every morning, and Ellis serves it out on the rooftop. The menu changes daily, and the food is always packed with flavour. It's a great way to start the day, with fresh juice and coffee and a good chat about the best things to do on the island.
Since the ocean is less than a few minutes walk in any direction, you don't have to think too much about planning your day. You can wander in any direction and find something to do. Greg has some great recommendations, from a visit to the seahorse sanctuary to a sailing trip around the islands.
Small stalls pop up around the island offering local delicacies and crafts. There's plenty of restaurants to choose from too (although they all close before 9pm). Fresh lobster is everywhere at a bargain price. We found some incredible coconut curry too and fry Jacks too - a must whilst you're on the island.
One of the main draws to Caye Caulker is the incredibly friendly people who live there. Locals on the street will stop to say hello, and even remind you to slow down! It's easy to see why people return year after year to stay at Yocamatsu. From the minute we arrived we felt like we were visiting friends. We talked and laughed like we'd known them forever. If you're looking for somewhere to stay on Caye Caulker, the guys at Yocamatsu will make sure you get the most out of your stay.
